VABT ASSISTANCE

The VABT supports Victorian professional performing arts workers from theatre, film and television: on and off stage, in front of and behind the camera. This includes actors, dancers, opera performers, crew, directors, creatives, circus performers and comedians.

Applicants may be requested to provide information on their professional involvement in the Victorian performing arts industry.

Please note: The VABT supports professionals from the fields of stage and screen. The VABT is unable to directly assist those who work primarily in the music industry.

Please see our list of additional resources for assistance channels available to individuals that the VABT may not be able to assist, including musicians, performers based outside of Victoria, visual artists and other individuals beyond the performing arts industry.

The VABT is run by a volunteer Committee of Management elected by their peers and supported by three Honorary Trustees. Each application for assistance is discussed by the Committee and assessed on a case-by-case basis. A member of the Committee may make contact with applicants to discuss their circumstances and request additional information where appropriate.

As the Committee are all volunteers, we do our best to deal with all applications as quickly as possible. It is important to know that all matters referred are kept in the strictest of confidence.

All applications are considered on a case-by-case basis.

Financial relief has been provided for varied purposes, including medical and dental costs, utility bills, respite care and basic survival. We also assist people by directing them to resources and professional advice. Grants are usually given for emergencies and are generally not ongoing. Some examples of assistance we have provided include:

• An electric wheelchair and mobility aids
• Supporting members of our industry in their battles with cancer
• Financing a hip replacement operation for a respected member of the industry
• Assisted the families of past recipients with ongoing financial support
• Maintaining a relationship with members of our community by giving them an Annual Christmas Grant

Financial support is only given to the people in our industry who are experiencing an emergency health crisis. We are unable to provide support for the following:

• Unemployment or underemployment
• Funding for productions or films
• Fundraising platforms such as GoFundMe, Kickstarter or Indiegogo

The VABT is committed to supporting Victorian artists and crew through health crisis and difficult times. To further assist, the VABT has compiled a range of resources that may be able to provide additional assistance.

All applications are reviewed on a case-by-case basis, so to assist the Committee of Management in reviewing your application, please endeavour to provide as much information as you can.
